My Teaching Experience I have taught 4th grade, 5th grade, and 6th grade math (among several other subjects). I recently got married and relocated, and before returning to the classroom in my new location, I have chosen to tutor in the area and do further studies to prepare. I currently tutor math from grade 2 to SAT mathematics with a company that teaches math to kids their way. In working one-on-one with students, I’m gaining valuable information about how various students learn math, retain what they learn, master concepts, and learn to persist and work for accuracy. I’m definitely still in a learning mode about teaching. I am passionate about the support of teachers. This site is my way of passing on the support I’ve received and showing my gratitude for the help I’ve received from mentor and master teachers, without whom I simply would not have made it in the classroom. This is what has worked for them and for me. Please feel free to email me at mathwithsanders@gmail.com to inform me of any strategies that work better. It’s just a natural policy of mine to stay open to any and every solution that helps teachers and students and then pass it along.
My Teacher Mission Statement My mission as a teacher is to provide world-class mathematics instruction in a safe, effective learning environment. Students in the U.S. rank 19th in the world in mathematics performance, and that fuels part of my passion about this mission.
Why I’m Drawn to Teaching Knowing what students will be asked to do once in college, knowing that students will be competing for work with others even in countries not of their own. . . I can’t HELP but be passionate about education (world-wide). For me, it all comes down to this: A person’s ability to think and what a person knows and is able to learn will SERIOUSLY impact how the person feels and lives and what he or she can do for those he or she loves. It will SERIOUSLY impact what kind of work he or she can get and maintain, and one’s work impacts life greatly. So I view every single student that I teach as a person who is 1) either developing his or her brain for his or her PREFERRED abilities, activities, work, income, and life . . . 2) or not. I am so excited about certain recent math education research, certain initiatives, and the judicious use of technologies that enhance teaching and learning. We know and are learning a lot about what it takes to provide world-class math instruction in every school. (Did you know that Singapore’s math students are number one in the world? If you visit www.singaporemath.com and click on the “Singapore Math Story” link at the top, you can learn more about the success and characteristics of Singapore mathematics. Particularly enlightening is the Air Study, which is linked in at this page as well.) Providing an equitable education for every student is a huge, noble undertaking. I say count me in! I’ll contribute to the effort! And this is why I teach! |
